The message tells you, that you are trying to login with userid 'root' but without password. Obviously, the user root does have a password.

You have to edit config.inc.php (in phpmyadmin folder) and supply the password at the appropriate line (you will find it easily - simply search for 'password').

Just a quicky, but does the following help?

/* !!! DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE, EDIT config.inc.php INSTEAD !!! */

You're post lists config.php.

Could one change the root password at http://localhost/security/index.php?

Is config.inc different from config.inc.php you are referring? if it is, I don't see config.inc.php in the phypmyadmin

There is no config.php in the .\xampp\phpMyAdmin directory.

There is a config.default.php in the .\xampp\phpMyAdmin\libraries directory which you obviously have changed the name to config.php moved it to the .\xampp\phpMyAdmin directory and pasted it in your post above or you have some other file handling issue that only you would be aware of - but the results of this file handling issue has you in this trouble now.

There is a config.inc.php which is the correct file to edit.

To work around this issue, make a copy of the pasted config.php and rename that copy to config.inc.php

Then rename the above pasted config.php back to config.default.php

A lesson to learn here is to always make a backup of any of your original configuration files before editing, then you can always revert if things go wrong - like in your case.

BTW I have not checked for correctness the pasted config.php nor for it's suitability to perform after renaming, but if it fails to work then the only other alternative to resolve this mess you have got your self into is to uninstall XAMPP as per the readme_en.txt file and then reinstall a fresh XAMPP, but this time be very careful what you delete, change, move or edit as it will impact heavily on the smooth running of XAMPP and it's modules.
