Another httpd.conf File

Problems with the Windows version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

Another httpd.conf File

Postby geekmaster » 13. December 2007 14:16

I'm VERY new to this.
I really need help.
My domain name is 347media.com.

Can someone please edit my httpd.conf file to have the sub-domain mail.347media.com and main domain 347media.com?

Please.
Thanks in advance.

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "D:/server/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "D:/server/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default.  It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

# ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process
# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum  number of requests a server process serves
ThreadsPerChild 250
MaxRequestsPerChild  0

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk.  If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "D:/server/apache"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses (0.0.0.0)
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

# However, Apache on Windows allows either the Unix behavior above, or can

Or maybe you can give me a couple lines of code if you don't want to edit the thing for me? :/

From what I can see on the Internet you have your main domain 347media.com working already and going to an XAMPP Apache server at IP 69.112.68.55.

It would be best practice to leave the httpd.conf file at the defaults that were set when you installed XAMPP.

The Apache configuration file that is designed just for this purpose is:
xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-vhosts.conf

This recent post might give you some clues as a 'how-to', then post back if you get stuck, or what you try gives you errors, again with as much detail as your first post.
http://community.apachefriends.org/f/viewtopi ... 743#111743

BTW - When you have the 2 domains, localhost and your main domain 347media.com working, then it would be time to sort out your sub-domain and the reasons or what you have in mind for this sub-domain, as there are at least a couple of scenarios that would relate to the mail.347media.com sub domain and both are handled quite differently.

Also to get these working from the Internet you have to configure your DNS and nameservers at your domain name registrar - GoDaddy, which you also appear to have done already.

So what I have is
Code: Select all
#
# Virtual Hosts
#
# If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/>
# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.

#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
##NameVirtualHost *:80

#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for all requests that do not
# match a ServerName or ServerAlias in any <VirtualHost> block.
#
##<VirtualHost *:80>
##    webmaster webmaster@dummy-host.example.com
##    DocumentRoot /www/docs/dummy-host.example.com
##    ServerName dummy-host.example.com
##    ServerAlias www.dummy-host.example.com
##    ErrorLog @rel_logfiledir@/dummy-host.example.com-error_log
##    CustomLog @rel_logfiledir@/dummy-host.example.com-access_log common
##</VirtualHost>

##<VirtualHost *:80>
##    webmaster webmaster@dummy-host2.example.com
##    DocumentRoot /www/docs/dummy-host2.example.com
##    ServerName dummy-host2.example.com
##    ErrorLog @rel_logfiledir@/dummy-host2.example.com-error_log
##    CustomLog @rel_logfiledir@/dummy-host2.example.com-access_log common
##</VirtualHost>
NameVirtualHost *:80

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName localhost
DocumentRoot "D:/server/htdocs"
<Directory "D:/server/htdocs">
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName 347media.com
ServerAlias www.347media.com
webmaster webmaster@347media.com
DocumentRoot "D:/server/htdocs"
<Directory "D:/server/htdocs" >
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
CustomLog logs/347media.access.log combined
ErrorLog logs/347media.error.log
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName mail.347media.com
ServerAlias www.mail.347media.com
webmaster webmaster@347media.com
DocumentRoot "D:/server/htdocs/mail"
<Directory "D:/server/htdocs/mail" >
Options Indexes +FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
CustomLog logs/mail.347media.access.log combined
ErrorLog logs/mail.347media.error.log
</VirtualHost>

This is the mail.domain setup.
This is in the vhost httpd.conf.
workable?

workable?

What you are saying is your localhost (XAMPP) and your main domain are both in the same DocumentRoot?

Might be better if you deleted or renamed the XAMPP index.php file from the htdocs directory and then use your main domain's index file in it's place.

Then your DocumentRoot and <Directory> directive for localhost would be:
"D:/server/htdocs/xampp" - if that is the path you installed XAMPP in.
Accessible now by the URI:
http://localhost/xampp/

This would have the effect of separating the two and then your main domain would still be accessible locally from
http://localhost
The XAMPP Welcome Page, Demos and Information from
http://localhost/xampp

As well as your main domain name for those out on the Internet.
http://347media.com
http://www.347media.com

And whatever you have in your mail subdomain directory.
http://mail.347media.com
http://www.mail.347media.com

But only you can tell if all this works by giving it a try.

If your want a mail server to work with your mail.347media.com then you have to configure your mail server software and your MX records (Mail Exchange) at your domain name registrar or where ever your DNS Zone File is located to reflect this address - just having a subdomain won't do anything except serve the files contained in the <Directory> and DocumentRoot location of the mail subdomain.

Usually you would serve a web-mail script in the mail subdomain just like you would serve a forum script if you had a forum subdomain set up etc.etc.

I think I just did that, didn't I?

You did make a backup of the httpd-vhost.conf file before editing it?

You did return the httpd.conf file you edited back to the defaults ie. from the backup you made of the httpd.conf you edited?

Did you install XAMPP to D:\server ???

If you are having problems starting Apache then do as it tells you in the httpd-vhost.conf file:
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.
At a command console in
xampp\apache\bin\
or where ever your path is to the apache\bin directory
Then type this command at the prompt:
apache -S

I made backups of everything.
I did install xampp in D:\server not D:\server\xampp.

You will see that the xampp web files are in
D:\server\htdocs\xampp

D:\server\htdocs\ = http://localhost

Minus the XAMPP index.php file in the D:\server\htdocs directory you would need to type in your browser:
http://localhost/xampp
Which is how I have define the virtual host containers - simple really.

You have a problems with reading my posts especially when it comes to case.
D:\server\apache\bin>apache -s

I typed:
apache -S

On the reference link in an earlier post of mine it clearly states:
ServerAdmin serveradmin@domain1.com
Which should have had you type in
ServerAdmin webmaster@347media.com

You seem to making lots of simple errors that Apache is not tolerant at all with.

Server errors are best read in the server's error log.

Sorry.
My English is not so good.
So what you are telling me is that I can go to http://localhost/xampp/ (which is where i am right now) and there is some configuration in there that allows me to set virtualhosts?
Where are those controls?

I still dont understand why mail.347media.com is not working if I did nothing wrong in the config file.

Did you install XAMPP to D:\server ???

Yes
You have a problems with reading my posts especially when it comes to case.
D:\server\apache\bin>apache -s

I typed:
apache -S

I saw that you said that. That's why you can see in the lines below the mistake that I corrected it and you can see the output.
I removed the webmaster part that was preventing apache from starting, but it still did not fix my issue with mail.347media.com not working.
You will see that the xampp web files are in
D:\server\htdocs\xampp

I don't understand how this is relevant to my subdomain/alias issue.
That fact that you pointed out is obvious as this is how XAMPP comes installed (xampp folder in the htdocs)

My issue here is getting an alias/sub-domain working.
Anyone seeing this thread, please don't dismiss it as resolved because I still don't have an answer.
