OK, I've got this Xampp thing installed...

I'm wanting to host my own SMF forum, home-made site and FTP from my machine...

I got a free domain from No-IP.com pointing to my IP...

How do I set Xampp up so people can connect to me?

I have absolutely no clue...

First you could do no better than to start by searching this forum to help you with this XAMPP (thing?) - here is an example of how to search and the keywords are on topic for you also a search for no-ip or dns may help.

Search in the Xampp for Windows forum, category Apache Friends in English, using the keyword vhost or virtualhost will give some clues and example solutions - you can also add Izzy in the Search for Author field if you wish to narrow the search a little but is not essential.

Read the related Apache documentation.
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.3/vhosts/
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.3/vhosts/examples.html
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.3/mod/core.html

Also Google is your friend.

Have a go at setting up your server using the information you glean from your readings and your searches

Then if you have issues post back with as much detail of what you are doing and how you are doing it and a knowledgeable forum member will be only too pleased to try and help you.

More than likely, you'll have to talk to your ISP about getting a business account set up to host the site from your machine OR need to purchase hosting space that will connect to your computer when you do FrontPage extensions or whatever you would need to do to get PHP set up. I know that FrontPage doesn't like PHP stuff, but the server on your comptuer doesn't automatically connect to your website online.

Alternatively, you can get paid storage space from sites like http://bluehost.com (the one I use) and upload your files as you edit them.

@Izzy:

I KNOW Google is my friend...

I've tried looking at Apache's website...
Here's what it had to say...

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/install.html#extract
Extracting the source from the Apache HTTPd tarball is a simple matter of uncompressing, and then untarring:

I don't even know what that means, let alone how to go about doing it...

@Kallista:

The whole point of downloading this software was so I could host my stuff myself...

What is the point of offering this software if you're going to suggest paying for hosting somewhere else... :roll:

I really hate all the elitist noob bashing on the net these days...

Fine if you won't offer help, other than "USE GOOGLE :roll: ", I'll simply not use your product...

Thats fine by me as you are obviously too immature (childish) and up yourself to even bother to read properly posts that are very helpful and you seem hell bent on wasting peoples time - but we won't tolerate such behavior here...

... because XAMPP is so very very simple that for you it is would be well over your head to even contemplate using it ... you are well versed in childish abuse but totally inept in reading and learning...

So Go elsewhere! :x

I'll add this for those other that the thread starter that do wish to read and learn. Oh, and I'm a noob. :)

The following suggests to me that S3NTYN3L misses the whole point of XAMPP:

XAMPP does this stuff for you. Without XAMPP I'd have no chance of getting Apache and MySQL installed and working.

No offence S3NTYN3L, seriuosly, because I started they and then found XAMPP.

XAMPP is your friend. Izzy's ok as well. ;)
