Malformed data

Postby monter » 09. November 2007 00:49

Hello, I noticed strange thing. Media (and sometimes HTML/PHP content) on my PC are displayed malformed.
Try this:
Image
Refresh several times with Ctrl+F5 and see what happens. The same thing is with MP3-s and other files.
Sometimes http://monter.homeip.net/php-info.php appears broken with binary data.
I couldn't find the problem and I don't know how to fix it. Help.

What Operating System and XAMPP version are you using?

Windows XP (PL), XAMPP updated from 1.6.3a to 1.6.4 (in both this error appeared).
Lately I changed my motherboard and I needed to repair the system.
Some time ago everything worked fine.

The reason I asked about your OS was that in Vista there are some issues with installing XAMPP in a directory with spaces in the name, for example:
D:\Program Files\xampp\ - better to use just the root directory of a drive for example:
D:\xampp\

It does not apply to XP though but I always prefer to us the root directory location even in XP as it helps to eliminate any name based issues down the track.

The image you are linking to http://monter.homeip.net/pub/pigwa-foka.jpg does not show in the forum post or when I go direct to the link in my browser - in my browser it just displays the text "http://monter.homeip.net/pub/pigwa-foka.jpg" and no image.

The phpinfo.php file will only load in part and truncates before it has a chance to load - but truncates at a different location in the file with each attempt at loading it.

So I have been able to replicate some of your issues by going to your address link but the ftp location displays the images correctly when I click on one, do_konkusu.jpg for example, in my browser - which suggest that the ftp server is working as it should but Apache is not functioning as it should, perhaps.

We need to eliminate any possibility of XAMPP having any errors.

Can you remember what you changed in any of the ini or conf files that may be contributing to this behavior?

BTW what happens when you access http://localhost/ - are there any issues by clicking on any of the demo pages mentioned in the left hand frame menu?

So next, might I suggest you take a look at your Windows Event Viewer, under the Administrative Tools menu, just after you get a showing of any of your issues - Application and System menu items.

Also look into your xampp\apache\logs\error.log and access.log files, again just after things go belly up, for any possible clues.

Sometimes an absolute reinstall of XAMPP has fixed some of these stranger behaviors - make a backup of any files you wish to keep as reinstalling using the method set out in the xampp\readme_en.txt file requires you to delete the XAMPP directory in total after shutting down any XAMPP components and services that are running.

If you have had previous versions of XAMPP and have run the components as a service and those services have not been shutdown properly they can often cause issues.

So try this before you do much else and then restart Apache and MySQL using the bat files - you can revert to using them as a service once you are sure that they start without any errors using the bat files and this methods won't harm your system in any way:
Click on Run... from the Start menu.
Type sc delete apache 2.2
Click OK
Type sc delete mysql
Click OK
Click sc delete "FileZilla Server"
Click OK

This may not have any effect but at least we are going to eliminate as much as possible any XAMPP issues.

Also make sure all the ports that XAMPP requires are free, before starting any XAMPP components in the first place, by running:
xampp\xampp-portcheck.exe

Another thing to try is to add Win32DisableAcceptEx to the very end of the file xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf
Save and restart Apache.
Always backup ini and conf files before editing so you can revert if apache won't start - check for typos.

Another test is to make sure Apache is not running then from a command prompt inside the xampp\apache\bin directory issue this command:
apache -t
This checks the integrity of the httpd.conf file.

And if you are using xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-vhosts.conf file then do the same as above only change the command to:
apache -S

This will check the integrity of the httpd-vhosts.conf file.

Resolving this issue will be by trial and error unless a more knowledgeable forum member has seen these issues before and can readily provide a definitive fix for them - there usually comes a response just after I have posted a reply like this. ;)

Good luck.

My problem is probably solved. I re-installed SP2 and the data are displayed properly :)
