DBI::mysql installation failing

I need to add DBI and DBD::mysql to the perl instance on my mac osx 10.4
I've installed the Apple Developer tools, and installed cpan to do the Perl bundle addtions from that, however this all works on the native Perl installation, and not on the xampp perl installation.

This might be ok, except that the mysql install is in xampp and the native perl installation can't find any of the mysql and fails.

I added the /Applications/xampp/xamppfiles/bin to the PATH but I still get failures. In Writing Makefile for DBD::mysql I get:

dbdimp.h:22:49: error: mysql.h: No such file or directory
dbdimp.h:23:45: error: mysqld_error.h: No such file or directory

a whole slew of these errors.
Any idea how to correct this? do I need to add an LD_LIBRARY_PATH or some other env variables to let it find the proper files?
