about 3hrs experience w/xampp installation

just now have started w/xampp

* there's probably a cool faq on apache friends: point me to it?

* downloaded xampp & it seemed to have installed w/o problem, but following the directions of 'installing, configuring, & developing w/xampp', i get errors when i run apache_start.bat from cmd window.
* os is vista premium
* installed on a new primary partition
* on running apache_start, i get the following:
"(os 10048) only 1 usage of each socket address .. normally permitted.
"make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
"no listening sockets available.
"shutting down
"apache could not be started"

* request knowledgeable direction to successfully configure apache to run

Here'sa faq: FAQ

Your problem looks like you already have an application listening on port 80.
Often it's IIS. Try to send a netstat -a on your console to see who's using port 80.

*i have zonealarm firewall running; & dumb as a post here regarding server-anything (sorry!); could za be causal to apache run prob?

could someone post the name of a step-by-step book that might walk me thru apache-from-xampp setup?

the 1 person, who was kind enough to reply, wondered if my port was already being listened to; & i replied back, ..........but, i have no fundamental experience to tell me what to do now that i know port 80 is being listened to. i tried shutting zonealarm firwall down & trying again to no avail.

what's the effect to whatever program is listening at p.80? do i close it, disable it someway? how?

the 'installing, configuring & developing w/xampp' says what to do if apache starts w/apache_start.bat, but doesn't seem to touch on what to do if apache doesn't start

what's a baby-step-by-baby-step known good book to installing & configuring apache?

Normally, it's just too easy to install xampp. Normally

There's no step-by-step way to find that program. YOu have to search for your own.

As I said, often it's just the IIS still running as a service. Normally it's not the firewall, because you can't get the apache running on the machine itself and the firewall only blocks the traffic between networks.

Please go through all running services at look for any app which could act as a webserver like the IIS. Stop that service and try to start apache again.

this is a new machine, unnetworked & no other server has been installed

ran services & found no IIS service listed; also did 'help' on IIS & it shows it is not loaded by default

other than apache 2.2 i don't see a server started or listed

you think xampp might install better if i set up unix/ubuntu on a separate primary partition & d/l & install appropriate xampp?

if so: efficient uninstall methodology for win-xampp?

Well you have to have something running that's using port 80, skype???

unknown how to determine the prog.; can you offer a suggestion as to how to determine what's running at 80?

might try Angry ip scanner just to see if port is in use
