Install question

Hello,

It was recommended to me through another forum I had posted on to install XAMPP for Windows on my PC because I needed access to a server to take beggining programming classes for Web 2.0. I have a Sony Vaio laptop PC/Windows XP. Is this okay to run this on my laptop? I am so new to this and not sure how this works exactly. I use my PC for work--video/graphics ect. and don't want to mess it up...
