MySQL is Deactivated. how can i get it running? Aus Englisch

Hello, sorry I do not know enough German to post "aus Deutsch." Hopefully someone out there can help me.

Here's my problem:

When i start XAMPP and go to http://localserver and then click "Status" it tells me that everything works except for MySQL, PHP extension »eAccelerator« and PHP extension »OCI8/Oracle«.

I am only concerned about MySQL at this point, there is easily accessible information for the PHP applications. When I start XAMPP it gives me this readout:
sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start
Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.6.2...
XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)...
XAMPP: Another MySQL daemon is already running.
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...
XAMPP for Linux started.

I messed around trying to install Apache, PHP5 and MySQL with "apt-get" but was unsuccessful and installed XAMPP instead. Before installing XAMPP I removed everything I installed. It seems that XAMPP isn't using the MySQL server it installed.

Any ideas?

Figured it out:

I removed mysql-server but there were still three other MySQL packages installed. They were probably installed automatically when I installed MySQL before. The packages were mysql-server-5.0, mysql-client-5.0 and one other one that started with mysql. After removing them XAMPP has SQL running with no problem.
