Hi, I am trying to change the value of this from the default of "4" to "3".

Recommended changes don't seem to work.

Added to my.ini but it has no effect.
Can anyone help

You have a XAMPP?
--> XAMPP uses the file "my.cnf" and not "my.ini".

I orginally installed XAMPP 1.6.0a with the installed.

I added the information via WinMySQL admin panel. However this only gave me the possibility to save to my.ini.... and there wasn't much inside.

However, when I uninstalled the service and reinstalled it using the batch files, the next time I went into the WinSQLadmin program, the file had inreased in size and information. I made the settings to appropriate [mysqld],[mysiamchk]... and the "new" file said somehting about copying this to .../xamoo/mysql/my.cnf.... Previously I had also tried this, but it was as "empty" as the "my.ini" file. So instead I opened the file, and editied the same contents... After rebooting, I could see that the value had changed from 4->3.

... and now, if I create a new file, it can find those 3-letter words... however it doesn't find the old files.

Any ideas how to this to re-index?

BTW: Thanks for the help... most of which was pulled off another enquiry.

Don't use this program...

The correct path is "/xampp/mysql/bin/my.cnf". And that's the only file you must edit to change MySQL settings.
