wordpress php turned off or not on server

Hi i have installed xampp on my computer i have followed all the steps required but when i open the install wordpress file i get the following message
"WordPress requires that your web server is running PHP. Your server does not have PHP installed, or PHP is turned off."
i am unable to find a proper solution to the problem i would be most greatfull if anyone could solve the problem for me
