Unable to view databases created in mysql

HI,
I use Xampp for linux 1.7.3 a for installing and running Joomla1.6 Beta 14. After I install Joomla I'm able to view the databases created using phpMyadmin but the databases are not visible when I login into mysql as root. While I installed Joomla I gave the host:localhost username:root password:<none>. Only information_schema and mysql databases are visible in when I type "show databases" in mysql. But I'm able to view all the databases in phpMyadmin. All the databases have have the same privileges <"All Privileges". Any help in this regard would be appreciated.
