Running PHP scripts via terminal?

I was wondering how one can run a PHP script via the terminal with xampp?

I tried using

php /path/to/script.php

, but this requires me to install another php package in order to use this (which then breaks my script since it requires the configuration set up with xampp).

In the end, I'd like to have cron jobs running my scripts every so often, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it with a xampp install.
