XAMPP 1.5 - Apache only serving graphics < 255 bytes...

Very odd problem
After installing XAMPP 1.5 ,
Apache will only servce out graphics (*.jpg, *.gif, *.png)
when the file size is less than 255 bytes.

Example:
http://127.0.0.1/icons/
File Size
sound1.gif 248 will display
sound1.png 310 will not

The previous version of Apache (that came with red hat) works fine.
(I can stop XAMPP and turn on the old httpd...)

Error log shows no error
Access log shows GET request
wget (command line) shows:

--14:39:38-- http://160.129.203.205/xampp/img/head-linux.gif
(try: 5) => `head-linux.gif'
Connecting to 160.129.203.205:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response...
End of file while parsing headers.
Retrying.

(keeps trying about 10 times...)

Is there some new apache 2.2 filter I need to enable/disable ?
