Whats a good way to store my files outside of the VM?

What is a good strategy for storing my files outside of the VM and running them in the VM without having to copy and paste. I need to store my text files in a particular location so my time machine backup can access them. I don't back up large files like the entire VM file. But every time I make a change I also need to put the updated file on the VM in order to test it and that gets annoying.

Is there any solution to this?
