XAMPP-VM: Update PHP?

Can anyone advise me how to update to PHP 7.2 in XAMPP-VM 7.3.3.0?

After addressing a range of locale issues that were preventing me from adding the PHP repository, "apt-add-repository ppa:ondrej/php" now results in "gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found". (And "apt-get install php7.2" results in "E: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/ondrej/php/ubuntu/dists/focal/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.95.83 80]".)

Unfortunately, switching to XAMPP-VM 7.2.24 to get PHP 7.2 doesn't really solve the problem, as I still need to add ppa:ondrej/php to get php7.2-xml, etc.

Is there a reason for needing to use the VM version of XAMPP?
I would guess that using the normal installer version would solve all of your problems.
