Object not found! localhost

I have tried to install XAMPP 5.6.40 a couple of times and cannot get past this error msg.
after following the standard install instructions then type
"http://localhost" in my browser expecting to see the start page of XAMPP.

What I get is
Object not found!
The requested URL was not found on this server...
Error 404
localhoist
Apache/2.4.37(Unix) Open.....

I have tries searching on other forums but can find nothing specific to this problem.

Can anybody help please?

localhoist =/= localhost

Anyway - how is "localholst" resolved?? "Unknown Server" or similar should appear - an Error 404 is a totally different approach!

Correct, but if already an information is incorrect which could have been easily copy and pasted, which other information is not correct too?
Maybe the url was not only http://localhost but http://localhost/someressource?
And which Webserver sends this status code? Is that a valid XAMPP Apache signature on Mac OS X?
