Date is going out of sync all the time

The system time/date on my XAMPP installation is often behind by about 2 weeks.

Today is January 11, 2018, but if I enter date into the XAMPP terminal it shows Thu Dec 21 20:43:54 EST 2017

I've tried a number of time to simply reset it with the Linux date command but a day or two later it will always be 2 weeks behind again.

This is causing a lot of problems with my Git checkins so I'd like to find a working, permanent fix.

What is a "Xampp terminal"?

if I open the XAMPP app and click the Open Terminal button, it's the terminal window that opens.

I assume it's some kind of SSH into the XAMPP VM.
