MySQL Database Xampp NOT Working! Problem with permissons!

Problems starting the Xampp MySQL Datasbase...

I changed the permissions on the XAMPP folder - from everyone: 'read only' - to everyone: 'read and write'. The error messages began to show and i tried changing the permissions back to read only, however the error messages continued to show:

PHPMyAdmin Error Message is as follows:

MySQL said: Documentation
Cannot connect: invalid settings.
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.
phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

Any solutions? I have read other forums for changing config settings, permissions etc. but all have been unsuccessful.
