New to Xampp - object not found error

Hi,

I am new to Xampp and new to Mac. I had downloaded and installed Xampp and at it's most basic seemed to go smoothly. This includes being able to access and work with phpMyAdmin. My problem is trying to add more sites. I initially got a permission error, and then got rid of this by following some tutorials but now am stuck with the following 404 message:

I have no idea where to go from here. I have Googled the issues and tried everything that seemed relevant but to no avail. I'm sure there is something minor which I am doing incorrectly or haven't done but can't find it.

I have a suspicion that my httpd-vhosts.conf file is being ignored because it doesn't seem to matter what I do with it. This includes commenting out the phpmyadmin line and phpmyadmin still working in the browser.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running El Capitan and Xampp 5.6.14

Thanks Nobbie. What else can I tell you? There isn't much else to go with which is why I am at a loss and posting here to hopefully get the help of an expert. Here is everything printed on the screen:

This is a new computer with no prior configuration or changes made to it. So I thought this kind of problem might point to something obvious that I'm not aware of. I would be happy to provide snippets of config files or whatever makes sense? I reiterate that I don't have any experience with Xampp or working with Macs so I don't know what I don't know.

You don't tell us:

• which URL you requested
• what the full path of the file is
• what the content of your Apache access.log is

Without that Information providing help is extremely difficult

So this is all completely wrong:

1) If you want to put your own files and folders to Xampp (i.e. to localhost), you have to put them into the htdocs folder. I dont have an OSX installation, but i think htdocs is under xamppfiles (i.e. xamppfiles/htdocs).

2) If you want to call it in the browser, you have to provide the fully correct name after localhost. So move (for example) phpPgAdmin-5.1 into htdocs folder and after call it via: http://localhost/phpPgAdmin-5.1

Finally, you really should read some tutorials about Apache, as this is most important most basic knowledge, and not a technical issue by Xampp.

Xampp uses an example where you create a new folder and doesn't specify htdocs.

For ease of use and understanding, i only mentioned "htdocs". But, to be more precisely, the folder needs not to be "htdocs". Instead it has to match the value of "DocumentRoot" from httpd.conf, or the DocumentRoot of a VirtualHost (if you are using VirtualHosts). Each VirtualHost may have its own DocumentRoot.

Still, you should read some tutorials about Apache. The Xampp Readme is not sufficient, there are so many tutorials out in the WWW, pick another one and try to understand it.
