phpMyAdmin access denied error #2002

Hello, I am trying to learn PHP, so I downloaded XAMPP onto my laptop. So far, PHP is working fine, but when I attempt to access phpMyAdmin at http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ I get the following error message.

MySQL said:
#2002 - No such file or directory
The server is not responding (or the local server's socket is not correctly configured).
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that didn't make a difference. Here's my error log:

I have the same problem. I also uninstalled XAMPP and reinstalled. no change.

The trouble started after I reset the MySQL root password after seeing a message in XAMPP urging me to change it "MySQL has no root passwort set!!!"

I am not an expert user, but I did some research and tried a few things but all has failed.
