MySQL causes OS X freeze

Postby spookybathtub » 02. June 2013 04:31

I've been having an issue lately where my Dock service freezes the system, and I think I've tracked down the MySQL part of XAMPP as the culprit. Here are the exact symptoms:
    Cmd-Tab does not work
Expose / Mission Control Spaces does not work.
    Notification Center is frozen
    Hidden dock will not appear
The .db files in ~/Library/Application/Support/Dock/ are accessed constantly (as shown by fseventer)

I can fix all these problems immediately by doing the following:
    sudo /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/xampp stopmysql
    killall -9 com.apple.dock.extra
    killall -9 Dock
But they usually happen again as soon as I restart MySQL. Anyone else encountered this, or know of a fix? Is it possible that it's related to some specific SQL database on my system? I tried creating a new OS user account, and the same problem happens there.

I have exactly the same symptoms. I have a brand new Mac Mini with Mountain Lion.
I would appreciate a quick solution to that problem.

hm, i deactivated everything in system preferences / spotlight
everything working fine now...

maybe there is some issue when spotlight is indexing the application folder where xampp is installed?

MySQL causes OS X freeze

Interesting... That's possible. I'm away from my computer for awhile, but could you try adding /Applications/XAMPP to the Spotlight ignore list?
EDIT: That suggestion does not work for me. I continue having this problem and it is very serious. I've noticed it happens every time I run a particular PHP app, which heavily uses MySQL.

Here's what I've already tried:
Create a new OS user account
Remove / reinstall XAMPP 1.7.3
Delete ~/Library/Application Support/Dock/***.db
Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist

This is really frustrating. I'd love to get some advice or talk to tech support.

I recently upgraded to XAMPP 1.8.2 and I have the exact same symptoms. Now I've also noticed that when this problem happens, the XAMPP GUI shows a red dot for MySQL, even though I see it running in Activity Monitor. running 'xampp stopmysql' does stop it successfully though.
