localhost error server unexpectedly dropped the connection

Hi,

I have searched these forums and cant find any answers that help me so hopefully someone can... Am new to the mac environment so sorry if i'm missing something really obvious!

I have just installed xampp on my mac osx 10.6.7. I have place my website under htdocs. When i try and browse to the site through localhost i get this error

"Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost/bbwebsite/public_html/” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again."

I can browse to the index and see the parent directory just cant get to the website.

Is this something to do with the httpd.conf file?

Have checked logs and this is the consistent error im getting:
[Fri Jun 17 18:54:58 2011] [notice] child pid 773 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

Appreciate any help anyone can give me
