1. In Finder, select the htdocs-folder.
2. Choose 'Get info' from the File menu.
3. In the get-info, go to Sharing & Permissions. Click on the plus icon in the corner bottom left. If the button is locked, click on the locker icon in the bottom right to unlock the buttons. You will need to enter the password of an administrator-account of your mac in this case.
4. You will get a window with users on your mac. Choose yourself on the list and click 'Select'.
5. Give yourself read & write permissions.

Now you should be able to create folders inside the htdocs-folder.

The "get info" for my folder /Applications/xampp/htdocs doe not show Sharing & Permissions. There is an arrow in the lower left corner of the folder icon. I'm installing Eclipse and it suggested placing my development folder in htdocs. There is also an htdocs folder in xamppfiles, should I use it instead? It shows permissions setting.

Yes, you should set permissions for /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs.
/Applications/xampp/htdocs is an alias of that folder.
