MySQL won't start

Postby tobym » 20. December 2009 21:05

Hi,

I downloaded and installed XAMP, and everything seems to be up and running except MySQL won't start. When I click start it just says:

MySQL did not start!

Please take a look into the log file of MySQL for informations on why MySQL did not start.

But - I don't know where this log file is. When I open the errorlog there doesn't appear to be anything related to MySQL:

Previously I tried running MAMP and also had a problem with MySQL, this is the error I got with that one if it helps/could be the same problem:

091220 10:39:15 mysqld_safe mysqld from pid file /Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.pid ended

Thank you!

I too just installed XAMMP and when I started it for the first time and tried to start MySQL I got the following error message.

"XAMPP's MySQL can not start while another mysql server is running. Please turn it off and try again."

I had previously installed and used MAMP but before this new XAMMP install I deleted MAMP and emptied the trash. I can't think of any other way that a MySQL server could be running.

I will try restarting the computer to see if that solves the problem, but I am in the middle of updating my music library and cannot stop the computer yet. Maybe that's all it is.

Any luck? When I restarted I got the error saying it couldn't start while another MySQL server was running the first time I tried to start it, but then it went back to the previous error. I deleted MAMP and have web sharing turned off. Does anyone even just know where the MySQL log file is? I've looked all around and can't find it, apologies if I'm overlooking something basic.

Open Activity Monitor and see if there are any mysql or httpd processes running. If so, kill them and then try XAMPP again.

Rebooting should also work... unless you have set MAMP start up at login (see Sys Pref/Accounts.)

Thanks everyone for your advice - I looked into it further.

When I don't have any other applications running besides xampp, there's no MySql or httpd processes, and web sharing isn't enabled. Restarting doesn't fix the problem, though it did at one point change the error message as described in a previous post.

I googled to find how to start and stop Mac OS X's MySQL installation from the command line, and tried the following:

sudo /usr/local/mysql/support-files/mysql.server stop
Password:
ERROR! MySQL manager or server PID file could not be found!

(no effect on trying to start MySQL from XAMPP)

sudo /Library/StartupItems/MySQLCOM/MySQLCOM stop
Stopping MySQL database server

Which still had no effect on my XAMPP problem, but I was surprised to see that MySQLCOM was in my startup items folder at all - it doesn't show up in my login items control panel. I tried to drag it out of that folder, but it's apparently read-only; I can delete it, but I'm afraid it might be read-only for a reason and doing so would break something. And if there are no mysql or httpd processes running, it's possible it's not affecting things anyway.

My friend had tinkered unsuccessfully with trying to get MySQL started months ago before I found XAMPP, so while I thought all the changes had been backed out, it's possible there are one or two vestiges of that process around.

Any thoughts? Thanks again.

The fix is here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=38617#p154911

Bascially,

sudo rm /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/mysql.server
sudo ln -s /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/share/mysql/mysql.server /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/mysql.server

Still no dice - same error. Thanks for the thought, though. I'm just using the mysql installation on my hosting company's server for now, though it would still be awesome to test stuff out locally. Is there really no mysql error log file like the one indicated in the message?
