I've been working happily with XAMPP for the Mac fr the last year with few problems. However this morning MySQL refused to start. No matter what I tried I couldn't solve the problem, so I thought the best thing to do would be to re-install XAMPP. A newer version was available too.
Firstly I couldn't install the new Xampp over the top of the old one, and I couldn't delete the xampp folder either (insufficient permissions). So I moved the old Xampp folder to my Trash, then installed the new one. However of course this means that none of my databases exist in the new version. I had 20+ databases, and I desperately need to get them back! Does anyone know how to do this?
If you are using Time Machine, then you need set back a backup of the time MySQL was still working. The data of the MySQL databases is stored in '/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/var/mysql'. Set back that folder (with Time Machine) and hopefully your MySQL databases are accessable again. If not, then you could set back the backup of the entire XAMPP installation.
For setting backups back: 1. Start Time Machine (in Applications) 2. Navigate to the time when MySQL still worked. 3. Navigate to the folder to set back and select it. 4. Click on the 'restore'-button (in the right bottom corner of the screen). You will be asked if you want to overwrite the current folder or if you want to keep both versions. Choose what you think is right.
