I am total new to xampp and joomla during joomla set up item 4 data base set up cant find MySQL error 404 can you help please

I not to sure of what I'm doing but I do'nt think the MySQL that came with xampp is set up or running properly and I do not know how to check.

I now can not instal joomla1.5 it says server can not be found error 404 By using the default password for the FTP user nobody everyone can upload and change files for your XAMPP webserver. So if you enabled ProFTPD you should set a new password for user nobody. How do I do that
