phpMyAdmin setup issues with the xampp install - general

I am encountering a number of issues due to xampp's setup of phpMyAdmin. I am at the point of dumping the phpMyAdmin that came with xampp and installing directly from the phpMyAdmin site, but I am fearful that there might be numerous issues that I am unaware of.

Any input regarding obstacles involved with this method would be appreciated.

I am also going to post a separate message detailing the specific problems that I am having.
