Help with installation needed

Postby fatcow » 12. July 2007 11:26

I was recommeded to install Xampp to work with MySQL since I've no experience with working at CLI in Macs and was struggling to find out how to work with the binary distribution since all the documentation seems to assume much more familiarity with working at CLI than I have.

However I've had difficulties trying to get Xampp installed. I followed the instructions (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-macosx.html), downloaded the xampp-macosx-0.6.2.tar file for Intel Macs and went to step 2. No problem logging into root, but typing in the tar command I'm wondering how on earth the OS is going to know where the downloaded file is (my desktop) and right enough I got a file not found error.

I got some help on another forum with the right syntax to enter into Terminal to give the path to the file, but still got file not found, even though the file is siting there on my desktop and the filename and path are evidently correct. Eventually I shut down Terminal in despair and double clicked the file out of sheer exasperation, only to find it extracted itself into an Applications folder on my desktop. I dragged the xampp subfolder into my Applications folder and went to step 3.

This executed as specified in the documentation so I then went onto step 4 to test the installation via http://localhost. This all looked fine until I checked the status of the installed components. Everything was activated except MySQL. I checked out the MacOS X FAQ page, but it's under construction and has nothing on it.

Can anyone here help me with sorting this out? This is the 3rd day I've spent just trying to get MySQL installed and configured so I can start to learn it and it's driving me completely nuts!

See response to "having problems with installing xampp 0.6.2 on my powerbook" in this forum at http://community.apachefriends.org/f/viewtopic.php?t=25681.

Thanks for the response, but I gave up with Xampp and installed Mamp (http://www.mamp.info/en/index.php) instead. Brilliantly quick, straightforward no-hassle set-up. No conflicts with existing Apache installations either ...
