Apache won't install on a Mac OS X

Postby ApacheBear » 31. July 2006 01:20

I want to install XAMPP on an Apple MacBook Pro laptop. I downloaded XAMPP for Mac, unpacked it, then typed the appropriate command into the Terminal. Everything apparently installed except Apache. Below is the text displayed in the Terminal:

Starting XAMPP for MacOS X 0.5...
XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP4)...
XAMPP: Error 1! Couldn't start Apache!
XAMPP: Starting MySQL...
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...
XAMPP for MacOS X started.

I thought Apache was supposed to be installed by default on a Mac, so I typed http://localhost into my Firefox browser anyway, but I just got the "Unable to Connect" message - "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost."

What do I do now?

P.S. Thanks so much for all the work you put into XAMPP. I've been using it on my PC for a year or two now, and it's fantastic!

P.S. I decided to try and start the Apache program that's supposedly installed on my computer by default. So I went into System Preferences, disabled Personal Web Sharing, then re-enabled it. It seemed to work.

Now when I type http://localhost into my browser, I get the standard Apache greeting: "Seeing this instead of the website you expected?"

However, I'm supposed to see XAMPP's home page, with a variety of information about my XAMPP installation. I assume there must be some file(s) that I can modify so that http://localhost points to the correct page. Do you have any idea how I can do this?

set the mod_rewrite off

Postby bermouda » 06. November 2006 03:56

I had the same problem but mine is solved my not loading the mod_rewrite module!
Check out your /xamppfiles/logs/error.log, there you might find the httpd erros..
If you had the same problem then just edit /etc/httpd.conf and set the mod_rewrite module off by commenting the loader (#).

Once you are done, then restart the xampp.

Hope this help...
