MySQL version for XAMPP

Postby acolorado » 30. March 2005 07:34

Hi is there a way to build a XAMPP installer with older MySQL version, MySQL versions have been through a lot of changes and backward compatibility has not been very efficient. So for that reason some people need older versions of MySQL that allow a simple interaction with PHP.

Also PHP and register globals have been changed a lot and some apps wont support PHP5 for that reason. This is important since some need older versions to keep their apps running.

Please comment.

Hi,

no we are not planning to include older versions of MySQL.
Could you please explain more in detail what functions are not supported in the new versions?

You don't have to use PHP5 we have built in a switch so you can choose PHP4 or PHP5.

XAMPP is basicly thought for developers that what to be a step ahead.
We try to supply the recent stable software so developers can start developing without having to bother about how to get all the software together they need to start.

We're having a lot of problems with MySQL anyway...
Because in my opinion MacOS X has no idea about what compatible means.
There is no chance yet that I know of to make MySQL for example run on MacOS x 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3 with compiling it on one of those 3 versions.

Sorry

Technotes on MySQL 4.1

Postby acolorado » 30. March 2005 08:02

Password hasing is one, Dreamweaver incompatibilities is another one:

Technotes from MySQL:
An upgrade to MySQL 4.1 can cause a compatibility issue for applications that use PASSWORD() to generate passwords for their own purposes.
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/appli ... d-use.html

These differences make authentication in 4.1.0 incompatible with that of releases that follow it.
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/passw ... 4-1-0.html

Technotes from Macromedia:
MySQL 4.1

Which version of PHP / MySQL do you use, as MySQL 4.1 handles the users differently this might break the Dreamweaver server model implementation.
http://www.macromedia.com/support/dream ... sql4-1.htm

We develop extensions for building web applications in Macromedia Dreamweaver, and we would love to recomend your bundle installation when Mac users come to us and ask us how to set a development enviroment on their Macs.

We usually recomend to download everything from the official pages and configure it themselves. But we can see how XAMPP would make this faster and painless. For example on windows we usually recomend appservnetwork.net and we point with the specific safe version which right now is AppServ 2.4.1.

Hi,

for the MySQL incompatibalitis, is this not the reason why there is the option "old-password" for my.cnf?
We use this in the Linux Version AFAIK.
We have not standardly put it into the Mac Version, because up to now there is no need to and to migrate later as we will at somepoint have to do in the Linux Version will not cause as many problems.

Sorry, but you and your customers will have to carry on using the originaly packages that are supplied.

Dreamweaver will have to change their software.
Since MySQL-4.1.X is now the stable branch they will have to do so anyway.

Sorry for the bad news.

MySQL version for XAMPP

Postby ccb700 » 11. April 2005 21:21

Hi,

I've been using XAMPP for WinXP successfully but I'm reading and posting in this forum because I'm moving my dev environment to Mac.

Concerning MySQL 4.1, I experienced the authentication problem referred to in the Macromedia technotes http://www.macromedia.com/support/dreamweaver/ts/documents/mysql4-1.htm when I installed it with the "official" PHP installation available from PHP.net. However when I reinstalled everything using XAMPP the problem did not occur, leading me to belive that XAMPP's PHP compilation uses an up to date mysql extension unlike the "official" windows compilation from PHP.net.

I wonder if this is true also of XAMPP's Mac OS X PHP compilation? Has anyone tried it and encountered the authentiaction problem? Simply accessing phpmyadmin would show if this problem is present or not.

How do I switch from PHP 5 to PHP 4?

Thanks.
