Problems installing Perl DBD-mysql

I am trying to install Perl DBD::mysql and DBI driver in order for Perl to interact with the DB. DBI installed fine...

DBD "perl Makefile.PL --mysql_config=/opt/xampp/bin/mysql_config --testuser =root --testhost=172.21.0.217" went fine...but the make stopped with an error.
dbdimp.c: In function `mysql_db_quote':
dbdimp.c:4559: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type
dbdimp.c: In function `mysql_db_last_insert_id':
dbdimp.c:4582: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `dbdimp.o'

Has anyone else had this problem? and if so how did you solve it?
