Newbie need help with ftp and saving files through scripts

I'm using xampp for windows already for an long time, but windows is a biy unstable fro an server. So i tryed linux redhat.
And i found some problems.
1. I cant write or overwrite any files with ftp. When i look at my files descriptions it says that the user nobody and the group nobody had write acces.
But i changed the proftpd.conf file. I changed teh username and pass.
Now i can login with that username, but still dont have any write access.
2. I have an script which i can use to upload pictures to my server. Normally with windowd i just saved them to C:/xampp/htdocs/pics/
, but where do i have to save them now with linux.
I hope you guys can help me out.
