Chromebook Install Fails - Chromebooks work well for Web Dev

Postby ChromeWannbe » 20. January 2021 18:52

Hi

I am tried to install on a Chromebook. This is the second chromebook. The first worked fine using:

https://medium.com/@john.stamp/set-up-chromebook-for-web-development-with-a-build-in-linux-subsystem-crostini-65e946aa23
Excellent article. The best I have found so far. My first Chromebook install went well and was useful for web development.

This is what happened:
username@penguin:~$ sudo ./xampp-linux-x64-7.3.25-0-installer.run
./xampp-linux-x64-7.3.25-0-installer.run: 1: ./xampp-linux-x64-7.3.25-0-installer.run: ELF: not found
./xampp-linux-x64-7.3.25-0-installer.run: 5: ./xampp-linux-x64-7.3.25-0-installer.run: Syntax error: "(" unexpected

No useful help when doing search on this error. All assume the is a Chrome Browser issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Hi,

XAMPP only supports x86_64 architecture. if your Chromebook contains an ARM processor or 32 bit architecture it will not run.
We don't provide any support via personal channels like PM, email, Skype, TeamViewer!

It's like porn for programmers 8)

Thats the problem when trying to run the totally wrong binary code on the totally wrong processor. There is no room left for any meaningfull error message, as this is so horribly wrong, you also could try to run your car with honey and milk instead of Gas - it wont work. That error message is a last resort, a "help me" cry from your processor (which one?), that he has no idea what to do with that weird file.

Xampp is only available for Intel 64bit processors.

Thanks to both of you for your response!! I have looked all over the Internet for this information and failed to find it. The Chromebook that is dead had an Intel process and the one that fails has some type of aarch64 processor.

I am looking for a Chromebook that is under $300 with good battery life. Any suggestions?

By the way, that Chromebook that worked was amazing. Unfortunately, my young son stepped on it and it died. I am not a big fan of Google, but the Chromebook is functional and has long battery life. I am doing my own web projects on the side so I work on them when I have time. With the Chromebook I can get started where I left off even if it has been a few days. That is worth $300. Otherwise I have to restart the project, opening the editor, ftp, website, etc. It takes 15 minutes to restart the project. By then, I have used up much of my available time. With the Chromebook, I wake it up and get started.

Thanks again.
