Send Mail with PHP guide not working smstp

I followed the how-to Send Mail with PHP to test my PhP mail scripts. It's not working.
I installed msmtp and tested this. Msmtp is working from the command line, I receive immediately my test mail. The test script from the how-to fails in ERROR.
My setup:
Hyper-V
Ubuntu server 16.04.3
Xampp 1.1.11
Msmtp
