I did a search and found alot of posts all saying no you cant just upgrade php to a newer version BUT the posts are old so is it possible to be done now ?
xampp linux 64bit
It seems a shame to have to uninstall just to reinstall.

Build your own package and feel free to upgrade whatever and whenever you want. That will give you a deeper insight, lets talk after about "shame" or not,
