XAMPP 32 bit support

Hi ApacheFriends!

We continue working on adding new features in XAMPP but this time we would like to reduce the amount of work of maintaining them up-to-date.

We checked the demand and the number of downloads of XAMPP for Linux 32 bit and we checked we can remove the support for this platform. We also spend some time trying to support newer components for Linux 32 bit and they usually require changes and patches to support this platform. This will reduce significantly the amount of work for maintaining up-to-date the current three stable versions of PHP 5.5.x, 5.6.y, 7.0.z for XAMPP for Windows, OS X and Linux 64 bit.

We would like to hear your feedback before stop releasing this platform. We will release a new XAMPP version and we will announce this one will be the last XAMPP version that supports Linux 32 bit.

I'm working with older hardware as it is all I can afford these days. Running a 64 bit OS would slow and or cripple my operations.
Dropping support for 32 bit will have a dramatic affect on my ability to develop for my website. I'm guessing that means
I'm just going to be forced to waste my time building my own specialized lampp stack rather than using one that was
otherwise very useful for several years. It'll be a shame to see it go but such is the march of "progress" I guess.
Support for 32 bit has been rapidly eroding of late and I suppose the contributions of users such as I are rapidly being
left behind. I started programming in '79 and most of what I have worked on has now been passed by anyway.

Thanks for your feedback! Could you post which OS and architecture are you using for developing your websites or for deploying your sites in production? This could give us an idea about your current environment and see if it could be useful for other users.

Did you calculate the costs for newer hardware? I just built a new PC for my wife, it contains a new mainboard (ASROCK Mainboard, about 50,-€), some DDR3/DDR4 RAM (about 8GB, actually costs 25€), and a new CPU. An AMD A4-Series A4-4000 Boxed (including CPU Cooler) will be absolutely sufficient, the price is 25€.

So all in all we have a total amount of 100,-€, this gives you a modern, fast and sufficient new 64-bit machine. The costs of maintaining an outdated 32-bit software is a horrible multiple of that. Only to support old steam engines from the last century?

I am running a 32 bit machine with Ubuntu 14.04 OS (can't afford a new machine right now). I am trying to find the latest 32 bit version of XAMPP. Could you tell me what it is and where I might find a copy?

Thanks!

The latest version of Xampp does not support 32bit on Linux. You should go for an older version. You will find all versions (including all older versions) on https://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/ ... P%20Linux/

Alternatively you can use the Ubuntu Software Installer and Repositories instead of Xampp, Ubuntu delivers all Webserver Tools as well.

Last not least: i dont think you need a new machine for 64bit. Intel CPUs already support 64bit since many many years (i.e. the Pentium 4 from year 2000 already supports Intel 64), simply install an 64bit Ubuntu if you like to install the newest Xampp.

Thanks. That's what I figured. Do you know the version number of the last one that included 32 bit support?

Thats real fun!

In the Windows world there is no 64bit Xampp and all crying, who the hell needs 32bit Xampp, they say.
In the Linux world there is no 32bit Xampp - and still all crying, who the the hell needs 64bit Xampp, they say.

Obviously, it does not matter, which version is available: it is the wrong one! Funny!

So there will be no support for 32-bit xampp ... but still downloadable and usable in its latest version .. what would be the latest version of xampp 32bit? I'll use it for practical purposes in one of my notebooks, I wonder if I do not have this version much limited.

I understand that if you have new versions must conform to the new technologies, but apechefriends should clarify that ... I have broken my head looking xampp 32bits .. and hoping that I would download the page indicated .. download the of 64bitx -.-

If i were you, i would take a look on https://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/ ... P%20Linux/ - i already did that and it took me one minute to find out, that there is a 32bit version xampp-linux-5.6.23-0-installer.run which *should* be the latest version (dated 2016-06-28). So hard to find out??

Same for 7.0.8, also from 2016-06-28

Nice. Maybe you should explain to "HeckDan" how you were able to solve such a painfull problem, as he already broke his head: "I have broken my head looking xampp 32bits". Poor guy, breaking his head! That must be very painfull and its not worth to such a simple problem...

There is plenty of sympathy for the developers desire to eliminate unnecessary distributions. However, when it is possible to run 32bit binaries on a 64bit machine but not the other way around it would seem that the 32bit package is the more universal solution. I don't have a 64bit computer running Linux but most of the software, including a good bit that is packaged into the OS, running on my 64bit Windows computers consists of 32bit binaries. From what I can tell the Ubuntu flavor of Linux, which I'm using, does support the use of 32bit binaries on a 64bit machine. Absent that capability vendors would have a hard time selling 64bit desktop machines. Also, in the case of XAMPP which is intended for development rather than production extracting the last ounce of performance out of the hardware is not that important but being able to get the software to run is quite important.

Obviously I'm thinking if you have to choose between 32bit & 64bit it is the 32bit architecture that is the right choice. What am I failing to recognize?
