How to activate MySQL database?

I'm looking for help in setting up XAMPP to run with a WordPress module. I am working with Ubuntu 13.10. I successfully installed XAMPP using the sudo chmod +x [PROGRAM] and then sudo ./[PROGRAM] command. However, when I open the control panel and try to start all servers, MySQL Database fails to start while ProFTPD and Apache Web Server start successfully. Under the Status column, MySQL Database says "Starting..." for a long time. Then it says "Stopped". In the Application Log, I get no clues about what went wrong. Here's the text:

Moving on to the localhost display in the web browser, I get confirmation on the welcome screen that I have successfully installed XAMPP for Linux 1.8.3-3. However, on the Status page, I see that MySQL Database is deactivated. (PHP extension »OPcache« and PHP extension »OCI8/Oracle« are also deactivated. The four remaining components -- PHP, Perl, CGI and SSI -- are all activated.) Here's a screenshot:



I've checked the FAQ and looked for README files to explain why MySQL isn't activated or how to make it activated. So far, no luck. Hence, my first post on the support forum.

En esta vista se puede ver que componentes de XAMPP ya han sido iniciadas y funcionan. Si no se ha cambiado nada en la configuración de XAMPP, debieran estar activados MySQL, PHP, Perl, CGI y SSI.
