trouble after v1.8.3-2 install

QUESTION #1
I installed XAMPP v1.8.3-2 onto a Linux Mint-15 Cinnamon workstation.
When I start XAMPP, I see:
However, when I access the home page at http://localhost and view STATUS I see
troubles.
I regret that my sys-admin skills and my web-page
programming skills leave me wanting help to sort out this situation.
QUESTION #2
Is there a standard way to start XAMPP (a) on system boot, or (b) at user login.
Do most folks deploy XAMPP during boot or during login?
Concerning boot-time deployment, has anyone created Upstart "job" files?
