trouble after v1.8.3-2 install

QUESTION #1

I installed XAMPP v1.8.3-2 onto a Linux Mint-15 Cinnamon workstation.
When I start XAMPP, I see:
Code: Select all
     prompt$ sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start

     Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.8.3-2...
     XAMPP: Starting Apache...ok.
     XAMPP: Starting MySQL...ok.
     XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...fail.
XAMPP:  Another FTP daemon is already running.

However, when I access the home page at http://localhost and view STATUS I see
troubles.
Code: Select all
     Component                       Status                    Hint
     MySQL database             DEACTIVATED
     PHP                               ACTIVATED
     Perl                               ACTIVATED
     Gateway Interface (CGI)     ACTIVATED
     Server Side Includes (SSI)     ACTIVATED
PHP extension »OPcache«           DEACTIVATED    see FAQ <http://www.apachefriends.org/en/faq-xampp-linux.html#opcache>
PHP extension »OCI8/Oracle«      DEACTIVATED    see FAQ <http://www.apachefriends.org/faq-lampp-en.html#oci8>

I regret that my sys-admin skills and my web-page
programming skills leave me wanting help to sort out this situation.

QUESTION #2

Is there a standard way to start XAMPP (a) on system boot, or (b) at user login.
Do most folks deploy XAMPP during boot or during login?

Concerning boot-time deployment, has anyone created Upstart "job" files?
