Is there any mod agains dos attacks

hey have you guys any suggestions against dos attacks, lol i have try reading on the net but they confuse me more than they help the only thing i found so far that seems resonable is mod_dosevasive but when i try to install it i get error webserver no running, when it is, lol thanks in advance
