Problems Replicating Site Locally with XAMPP (Linux)

I'm trying to prepare my Version 1.2.4.0 installation for upgrade and am trying to test on a local system.
I have replicated my site and database but am having issues.
The home page loads at localhost in Firefox with no images. Clicking on a link returns:
"The requested URL /~mysite/category.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."
I checked file permissions for all folders and they were o.k.
I took it one step further and reset all permissions to 777 recursively for testing.
But still no good....
Can anyone give me some pointers as to what may be causing this issue?
