Problems with the Linux version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

Firefox does not recgonize PHP files anymore

Postby PhdJ » 01. December 2011 10:27

I had Xampp 1.7 working perfectly on an Acer Aspire running Linpus.

Now Firefox does not recgonize php files anymore, it is asking me with what program it needs to open the files.

I have removed and reinstalled xampp but it did not help.

The message I get is that this is a "application/x-httpd-php".

Do I need to add some lines in a .conf file somewhere ?

I can see the thing I was thinking about is in the httpd.conf file.

The file is in /opt/lampp/etc and in the httpd.conf there is an include of httpd-xammp.conf there I can see the line :

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .php4

So that is not the problem ...

What else could be wrong ?

From your comment/question - I take it you are running desktop Linux

A. - Were things working correctly? (I guess so - you said it)

1st - if you had LAMMP set up to -autostart- in some fashion - make sure it is running

'/opt/lampp/lampp status' will do the trick

If yes/OK:

What happens when you go to "http://localhost/xampp" ?

Did you install any new software?

Did you 'update software' via a desktop script/application ?

Did you update your Firefox browser? try to Install Chrome, or Opera and see if the problem persists

Try accessing your site from another machine, it does not have to be Linux -

B. - The reason for my suggestions -
LAMPP probably did not decide to become 'HAL 9000', and the message wasn't "I'm sorry PhdJ, I can't do that" - its unlikely your httpd.conf needs tinkering because there is no likely reason it should have changed (so I agree with your basic premise).

Good Luck

xampp is running.

The system suffered a couple of crashes, so I guess that is the reason it stopped working.

I cannot update the Firefox browser, the version does not have an upgrade functionality yet.

I tried installing the latest version of Opera but after executing the rpm command nothing happens.

It works from another PC in the network, so it seems Xampp is not the problem, Firefox probably got damaged during the crash.

Any idea why the rpm command is not working ?

No idea on the RPM file - what was the term output???

Since your install is "bashed" (bad pun) I should tell you a wonderful thing -

LAMPP has a built-in backup that will save all your databases, settings and files (as long as you have not strayed off-course) to a single tar.gz file - then into a shell script that can be run to restore!

This means -- as long as you reinstall the SAME XAMPP/LAMPP version afterward -- you could re-install your linux box, and bring LAMPP back intact.

(I have tesetd this)... BUT TEST BEFORE RE-INSTALLING/REBUILDING!!! Be sure to both backup and restore using LAMPP, and make sure you can connect to LAMPP -- and -- copy the backup file off to a thumb drive (or whatever) before you burn linux to the ground.

Look below for a thread on it...
