If you install MySQL Workbench on XAMPP for Linux, you may have a problem connecting. The reason is that MySQL isn't installed in the default location for a Linux stack.

here's the right path information for a local socket connection:

Domain: localhost.localdomain
Path to socket:
/opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock
