PCNTL for XAMPP for Linux

I would like to install PCNTL, when i do PHPINFO i see --enable-pcntl, however when i try to run a script which uses pcntl i see

"pcntl_fork is not exist in current php configuration"

so apparently its not installed, is there something i need to do, how do i go about installing pcntl correctly using XAMPP in linux. if it were windows i know i would just enable the dll file in the php.ini, but what do i do with the linux version of Xampp
