Lampp will not start MySQL

Postby lgannon » 11. March 2010 01:05

I just installed LAMPP on my system(Ubuntu 9.10) and when I try to run it, I get this:

Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.7.3a...
XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)...
XAMPP: Starting MySQL...
XAMPP: Couldn't start MySQL!
XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...
XAMPP for Linux started.

Apache and ProFTPD are running but no MySQL.
Also, in the my.cnf file is the line "socket = /opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock" I can't find this file anywhere in the lampp folder.

What can I do to fix this?

I had the same problem
I finally figured out that i did not extract the xampp.tar.gz as su or sudo

here's what i did to solve the problem
1. rm the improperly installed lampp
2. extract the xampp.tar.gz with sudo or as su
3. start lampp

Code: Select all
sudo rm -r /opt/lampp
sudo tar -xzf xampp-linux-1.7.3a.tar.gz /opt/
sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start
