php is not opening in browser instead prompting for download

i have installed xampp1.7.3 and if if i enter url:http://localhost/
It works!

This is the default web page for this server.

The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.

is getting displayed and it is located in/var/www and if i try opening any .php file browser prompting for download . . . .php5 is enabled i tried in termial
