xammp on debuntu

hu guys

ok got xammp working on dubuntu but cannot send files via ftp from within dreamweaver
have been following the stuff in the internet and got as far as this
Make public_html directory in home directory:

mkdir ~/public_htmlLink to /opt/lampp/htdocs
Code:
sudo ln -s ~/public_html /opt/lampp/htdocs/$USER

and it fails as there is no folder for my login name
