Cannot find default runlevel

When I try to find my default runlevel in Ubuntu I get egrep: /etc/inittab: No such file or directory
so I type dir to see what files there are, there is an init.d so I type egrep: /etc/init.d but nothing happens.

How do I find my runlevel if the file inittab does not exist?

*edit*
I have a bypass, I made a launcher with gksudo /opt/lampp/lampp start and gksudo /opt/lampp/lampp stop for the desktop, I can start and stop manually.

Simply enter "runlevel" in a shell and it tells you the runlevel.
