phpmyadmin privileges question

I've installed XAMPP for Linux on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. I followed the installation steps and read the 'A Matter Of Security'. Typed http://localhost and tried it out - fine. However, when I go to phpMyAdmin it says, under Create New Database - No Privileges.Surely I must have if I installed XAMPP? Anyone put me right please.
