When (if ever) will XAMPP have a 64 bit stack?

I'm using mod_python, and inter mixing 32 bit mod_python in 32 bit apache does not bode well with 64 bit python on the system.

I am also looking for a 64-bit version of XAMPP for use with Red hat Enterprise Linux 5.

I would feel that with 64 bit machine becoming more and more there will be allot of other people looking as well.

Download all the source codes (from Apache, MySQL, PHP etc.) and compile them on your machines.

You can download Apache win64 bit binaries from

Then download PHP win64 bit binaries from

Then configure them to work together. Hopefully one day we'll have a xampp 64 bit version.

Hello. I've tried this but I have some problems though, it says: "Access denied. Failed to open WinNT service manager". I really don't know what to do, I just got this new computer and it is 64bit, and I badly need apche to work for my website work...

Had to install Windows XP Professional 32-bit in the end. There was no solution to my problem.

Hope this saves the next person a day's worth of hassle. Roll on XAMPP 64-bit.

If it's Vista 64-bit you're running, XAMPP will work just fine on it. I run XAMPP on my Vista 64-bit PC all of the time for local testing and development and never have had any issues.

As far as XP 64-bit goes, that is as bad of an OS as Windows ME was in my opinion. There's a huge lack of development for it and I never could get it to work right for me. So far Vista 64-bit has been the best choice unless you want to go with Linux, which that's really what you should do.

I would've been there a long time ago if it weren't for the fact Linux sucks at video rendering (for editing) and I can't get my RAID configuration to work in Linux.

In fact, you did not try http://www.openshotvideo.com/ which is based on ffmpeg (the most powerfull video rendering tool box ever)

Hey, thanks for this info. It's something I have been told since I posted this actually.

I just purchased a Mac, so I think I'll keep my PC-Linux/Vista for coding and the Mac for design-related stuff - seems like a good combo.

Is Ubuntu still the accessible choice for a Linux noob?

Ubuntu isn't bad, but if you want basic media codecs out of the box go with Linux Mint or Medibuntu. Both Mint and Medi are Ubuntu-based. I've been a fan of Mint for some time now, the community is much nicer and welcoming to new users.

How to run XAMPP on 64-bit Linux

XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. It comes in 32-bit flavor only but it's easy enough to get it running on 64-bit machines.

Step 1: Install XAMPP (in my case LAMPP) as you would.

wget url-to-xampp-version
tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.7.1.tar.gz -C /opt

If you try to start XAMPP, you should see the folllowing error message :

XAMPP is currently only availably as 32 bit application. Please use a 32 bit compatibility library for your system.

Step 2 : Now, the trick is to install the ia32-libs package available on the Ubuntu repositories.

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

The ia32-libs contains runtime libraries for the ia32/i386

architecture, configured for use on an amd64 or ia64 Debian system running
a 64-bit kernel. In other words, it allows 32-bit codes to run on a 64-bit machine.
